How to Get Jewelry Out of a Sink Drain

To get an earring, a necklace or a ring out of the drain, you have to move swiftly. Follow these steps as soon as you notice your jewelry is missing.

Immediately turn the water off to avoid flushing the jewelry away from the P-trap.
Do not shove anything, such as a stick or clothes hanger, down the drain in an effort to pick it out. Doing so can harm your drain or the jewelry.
If your jewelry is made of magnetic metals, like stainless steel or alloys containing iron, you can try fishing it out with a magnet. Attach a magnet to a piece of string and lower it into the drain to get your metal earring or necklace out of the drain. Remember to switch off your garbage disposal when doing this.
If the magnet trick doesn’t work or your item isn’t magnetic, you can open your sink pipe. Place a bucket under the U-shaped curve of your sink pipe called the P-trap and undo the screws or nuts holding it in place. Clear out the P-trap at its base to find your jewelry.
