Is Hydro Jetting Safe for Older Pipes?
By: Chris Campbell October 12, 2026
You’ve got a stubborn drain problem. Someone suggested hydro jetting, and now you’re worried that high-pressure water could damage your older pipes. That’s a valid and common concern. You don’t want to trade one problem for a bigger one. The good news is that hydro jetting can be safe for older pipes, but it’s the pipe’s condition, not just its age, that really matters.
Hydro Jetting Can Be Safe for Old Pipes
A pipe’s structural integrity is more important than how old it is. A 50-year-old cast-iron pipe in good condition can often withstand hydro jetting, while a newer but heavily damaged clay pipe might not. That’s why a camera inspection is the most critical first step.
A camera inspection allows plumbers to assess the pipe thoroughly and identify any existing buildup, cracks, corrosion or damage. For pipes deemed structurally sound, hydro jetting can be performed safely with adjusted water pressure.
When You Might Want to Avoid Hydro Jetting
Several key signs suggest hydro jetting could make problems worse, such as:
- Cracked or fractured pipes: If the pipes have existing cracks, fractures or significant breaks, high-pressure water can widen them or cause the pipe to collapse entirely.
- Separated joints: When pipe joints have separated or are poorly connected, the intense water pressure can force them further apart, leading to leaks.
- Misshapen pipes: Certain older materials, like Orangeburg pipe, become soft and brittle with age. Pipes that are already misshapen or have lost their structural integrity aren’t suitable for hydro jetting.
- Severe corrosion or pitting: While light to moderate corrosion can be safely cleaned, severe internal corrosion that has led to thin spots, significant pitting or pinholes indicates a weakened pipe wall that could rupture under pressure.
- Partial collapse: If a section of the pipe has partially collapsed or has a sag where water and waste collect, hydro jetting might not be effective and could worsen the structural issue.
- Tree root invasion: While hydro jetting can be excellent for clearing smaller roots, if the roots have already caused significant structural damage, like splitting the pipe, the pressure could exacerbate the damage.
Potential Alternatives to Hydro Jetting
Even when jetting isn’t safe for old pipes, you’re not stuck without options for getting your drains flowing again. Here are a few alternatives:
| How it works | Best for | Limitations | |
| Drain Snaking | A flexible cable with an auger on the end is fed into the pipe. The auger rotates to break up or retrieve blockages. | Simple clogs, localized obstructions and blockages closer to the drain opening. | Typically only drills a hole through the blockage and doesn’t clean the entire pipe wall of buildup. |
| Pipe Milling | A specialized tool with rotating chain knockers or cutters is used to mechanically remove hard scale, rust or concrete from the inside of pipes. | Heavily scaled cast iron pipes where the wall thickness is intact, but hydro jetting might not be sufficient. | Requires specialized equipment and skilled operators. |
| Pipe Lining | A tube is inserted into the existing damaged pipe and inflated, creating a new, seamless “pipe within a pipe.” | Pipes with cracks, small breaks or other damage where excavation is undesirable. | More expensive than simple cleaning, and slightly reduces the pipe’s internal diameter. |
| Pipe Repair/Replacement | Either repairing specific sections or replacing entire runs of pipe. | Structurally compromised pipes that are too damaged for cleaning. | Often the most expensive and invasive option, sometimes requiring excavation. |
